Summary:

Gwyn lives in the Last City of Men where every day is a new day. She’s committed to the Last City and what is required of her, that is, until she meets those bright green eyes in the Club of the Unknown. Suddenly she remembers things she knows she shouldn’t. The green eyes from across the Club follow her wherever she goes, but when she finally confronts the man who’s been following her, he reveals to her the truth behind the Last City of Men. This dystopian, thrilling, angsty series shares Gwyn’s quest to uncovering what is true and what is fiction about the Last City. What is the truth; and who really is the boy from the Club? Will gaining her memory be all it takes for Gwyn to shut down the memory makers and city engineers? In this fight against conformity, Gwyn learns compassion for her people as she intends to set them free from the Last City of Men and the lies they’ve made her people believe. She learns that peace isn’t without sacrifice, but what sacrifices is she willing to make to free her people?

Thoughts:

This story was engaging, thrilling and angsty as a love triangle unravels early on in the story. The green-eyed mystery from the club, turns into the compassionate and dutiful friend, Bran, but when Gwyn gets paired with her crush Lyle, does Bran fade to the background? Bran has a level of mystery that leaves the readers wanting more of him and those emerald eyes. Lyle is even more of an enigma when Gwyn learns just how much Lyle knows about the Last City. While Lyle and Bran are important to the story, they support Gwyn’s quest in finding her purpose. The reader experiences Gwyn’s metamorphous into the strong, lead character she becomes. Along with writing several entertaining and cohesive plots and subplots, Tara Brown’s strength lies in story development and description. She created this whole dystopian world with ample description, leaving her readers captivated by the fictitious Last City of Men. She focuses on all five senses so the reader can be fully integrated into her story. One of the things I like most about Tara Brown is the passion she writes with; any reader can feel how much she loves her characters and the world she created. Here are some notable quotes from Tara Brown’s Imaginations: The Last City of Men:

Quotes:

It was better to be new all the time, instead of being haunted by the past filled with unchangeable moments. The freshness of a new day kept our minds pure and our souls clean.

“I’ll help you stay awake.”

My eyes shot at his dark silhouette, “What does that mean?” I stumbled as I said it.

He grabbed me quickly. “It means that you’re a naturally curious girl and I am a boy with answers and a charming smile. Science says you’ll be able to stay awake.”

I saw everything I needed in his eyes. He was strong enough and brave enough for us both.

Recommendation:

I recommend Imaginations: The Last City of Men for any reader who loves YA or dystopian fiction novels. Tara Brown’s other books might not be as wholesome, but this book would be appropriate for mature high-school-aged readers and above. If you love adventure, intrigue, suspense and the classic love-triangle trope, dive into Imaginations—this book is perfect for you!

This book is one of three. It leaves on a perfect cliffhanger that made me buy book 2, Duplicities, right away.

Overall, I give Imaginations: The Last City of Men five stars for Tara Brown’s amazing plot and subplot, character development, and flawless world-building. This book was immersive and entertaining. I seriously could not put it down.
